Poker is more a sport than a game. A card game doesn't need preparation and maybe only a little bit of focus, but poker is not just a card game.

Poker is a complex sport and you can easily look at poker and analyze it like you analyze any other sports. So, let me ask you a question: What an athlete does before a 100M run at the Olympics? He most certainly doesn't drink at a bar or anything else, he prepares and focuses on the run.

In my opinion you definitely should do the same thing in poker if you want to play better, or even more if you want to become a pro. A professional poker player doesn't treats this as a game, not even refers to poker as sociable or entertaining, it's business.

You maybe need to know that you have to prepare different for two different kinds of tournaments for example. It is one thing to prepare for a live poker tournament and other to prepare for an online tournament.

But you don't have to make the mistake and believe that you don't have to prepare for one or another.

So for example when you play in a live tournament you have to make sure that you're face expression is guarded and you will keep the poker face all time in order to not give away your hands. On the other hand, joining an online tournament is much easier than joining a live one, except for the simple matter of eye strain.

But regardless the tournament type you need two things, preparation and focus. Because it's easy to get distracted by the other things you can do, especially if you play online poker tournament, so you need to keep this in mind if you are at a moment when you have to decide which type will be.

There is another type of preparation that you have to consider in poker. The, so called, metal preparation, which is as important as focus and physical preparation.

Most poker players don't consider mental preparation as something very important, but the more experience they gain the more they will realize that not giving it great importance is a costly mistake.

If you choose to give it a try you have to know that this will help you to be at 100% of your game by the tournament starts, or your next match.

The downside to this, if I may put it like this, is the fact that there is no such thing as a pattern to mental preparation, so basically is really very personal, you have to identify your own routine that will allow your brain to warm up and get ready for the matches that you are going to play.

I am with you man, the mental preparation is very important, but it is nothing more than a routine that every poker players should have in order to be ready to play at its best.

I personally start my day doing what I normally do, take a shower, eat lunch and then I go online and read some articles and comments about different strategies, it helps me to enter the mood and sometimes I found valuable information.

After this, I play some video games to stimulate my audio-visual senses and comment on some strategies to increase my focus.

And now I am ready to hit the tables.

This is how I can throw 100% in the game. And that's why I consider that every player should develop his own routine to arrive at tables stimulated and in a healthy state of mind.

I am with you on this one guys, it is definitely important to stay focus when playing poker. But there are some things that might distract you sometimes.

So in order to remain focus first of all you need to not let yourself become bored and distract by some other things that might get you of the track. Most probably you have to consider your mental state as well, make sure you are in the right frame of mind to play.

In order to improve your focus you can try different methods. I personally make notes. In my opinion this is a simple way to stay focused on the task in hand.

Another thing you can try is to narrow your focus. By doing this you will manage to focus on every player separately or categories of players. I like to start concentrate on only two players. You need to ask yourself one or two basic questions about the way they play against you, after you get this you can add another question. Even though it's look complicated, you will master it at some point, I guarantee.
